Oh love… such an amazing feeling, especially when it is reciprocated.
People often think that to feel love you need to find your soulmate – your perfect fit. But, is there such thing as the perfect fit? And what exactly is a soulmate and how do you know if your significant other is one?
What is a soulmate?
When looking for soulmate meaning online, you will find many different explanations and interpretations.
For instance, many people believe that soulmates are your “other half” and without them you can’t feel entirely whole and intact. Without a soulmate, you are supposed to feel like a piece is missing from the puzzle as you need someone to complete you. Well, that couldn’t be further from the true as we are born whole and complete and we have the ability to feel that wholeness by working on ourselves and developing self-love. Any soul that crosses our path, either a soulmate or a twin flame (check out the difference between soulmate and twin flame) will only enhance our happiness rather than being the source of our happiness.
It is essential to make this distinction before we start diving deep into the soulmate meaning. Happiness comes from within and if we try to extract happiness from someone else, we enter the field of co-dependency.
With that said, I don’t mean that soulmates are not necessary in our lives, that’s not the point. A soulmate is someone who plays an important role in our journey and can also act as a catalyst for change and personal growth. They are beautiful souls who enter our lives, either for short periods of time or an entire lifetime. After you meet a soulmate, your life will never be the same again as you share a powerful and unique energetic bond.
What is a soulmate connection?
Most people usually refer to a soulmate connection as a romantic relationship. However, a soulmate can be much more than just your boyfriend, husband or wife.
You can have a soulmate connection with someone with whom you have a feeling of deep or natural affinity. This may be a friend, a work colleague or even a pet. Check out the article “Is your dog your soulmate?”
Soulmate connections involve similarity, comfort, intimacy, compatibility and trust.
In the spiritual community, it is believed that a soulmate is a soul with whom one has spent many lifetimes as a friend, lover, co-worker or partner, and to whom one is usually drawn to fulfil a specific mission.
Can you have more than 1 soulmate?
You can come across many soulmates along your journey. Some will stay for brief moments in time, while others can walk by your side since you meet them until the rest of your life.
It all depends on the role they play at each stage of your life. Some might act as healers at specific moments when you need them the most, while others my act as your catalysts for change by teaching you many different types of lessons.
For instance, an ex boyfriend soulmate can teach you about the importance of setting boundaries and loving yourself first, and a dog soulmate can teach you about unconditional love.
What happens when you meet your soulmate?
It is commonly believed that when you meet a soulmate you can feel it immediately as the connection holds such a strong bond and feeling of recognition as if the two souls were meant to unite. However, there are also cases when the recognition is not immediate, and it takes some time to actually feel the importance that someone plays in your life.
One thing is for sure, life, after meeting a soulmate, is forever changed.
Soulmates signs
Wondering if your bae is a soulmate? Here are some signs that will help you identify your soulmate.
They feel very “familiar”
A soulmate will make you feel as if you have known them before or have spent many past lives together. They will know you so well, sometimes might even feel as if they know you better than yourself. There is enormous empathy as well as a sense of calm when around them as if you feel “at home”.
You can be yourself
With a true soulmate, you don’t feel the need to watch every word that comes out of your mouth. You can say things to them that would probably look offensive to others, because there is such a level of acceptance of each other. There is no need to try to look someone that you are not or “edit” yourself.
Communication is natural
Sometimes you don’t need to say much for a soulmate to understand what you mean. It can be your slightest reaction, a shared look, or a simple glance, and you just know they get it. Many soulmates have such strong bonds that they even report telepathic communication as it happens with twin flames (check out twin flame telepathy).
They are your mirrors
Soulmates are able to show you everything that is underneath the surface and reflect back to you your own flaws and insecurities, as well as dreams and strengths. By showing you parts of yourself that you were not aware of, they act as catalysts to help you grow to the fullest. For instance, they can push you to follow your dreams and become the best you can be.
You can rely on them to be honest with you, and bring up everything that is holding you back, so that you can change your life.
They are your teachers
Your life just looks different after you meet them. Even if they are not in your life anymore, things have forever changed because you crossed paths. This isn’t because you finally have a plus-one, no! It is simply because soulmates teach you lessons that help you become a new version of yourself.
Sometimes the lessons they teach are intentional, but often they are not. They can be just a by-product of your relationship with them.
They vibrate at the same frequency
This is something we discuss a lot in this blog. We are energy vibrating at specific frequencies and constantly attracting people into our life that vibrate at the same level. This is because the Law of Vibration and the Law of Attraction are always at play in our lives. Have you ever heard that “You don’t attract what you want, you always attract what you are”. The soulmates you meet were brought to you because you share the same energetic frequency. As you grow and evolve, you will attract new soulmates, see it as an upgrade or a 2.0 version ?
Can a soulmate hurt you? Can soulmates break your heart?
A common question I am asked about is if a soulmate can hurt you or break your heart. Well, as there are many types of soulmates and they play different roles in our lives, some soulmates can end up hurting us somehow. This is because pain is one of the biggest catalysts for change and growth. If everything in our lives was perfect, we would not be able to evolve in our consciousness evolution journey, or even enjoy the good things in this world. One of the universal laws is the law of polarity which says that there is no light without darkness, or joy without pain.
If a soulmate breaks your heart, stop, and meditate on the lessons. What have you learned from the experience? What would you do differently next time? Your life will never be the same after that heart break as it will teach you something that will be useful for your next relationship with another soulmate. Life becomes so much easier as we learn and evolve, so try to focus on the learnings rather than on the pain they have caused you. That’s the less painful way to move forward and to attract a new beautiful soulmate.
Just a quick sidenote here: Please do not allow someone to hurt you intentionally just because you think they are a soulmate. Be aware of toxic relationships.
What if your soulmate leaves you? How long do soulmate relationships last?
This is another common question I get. At this point you probably know my answer as I briefly touched this point previously. Some soulmates are in our lives for brief periods of time while others accompany us forever. This depends on the level of our soul evolution and the role they play in our lives.
For instance, you can spend your childhood with that best friend soulmate who you separate from when you both go to university and:
- never see them again,
- or to reunite 20 years later and rebuild the connection as if they have never left.
In the first case we see two people who went on separate journeys and had experiences that changed them so profoundly that they got to completely different energetic levels and didn’t feel the pull to reunite as they probably didn’t have much in common anymore. In the second case, we see two people who went on separate journeys and had different experiences which took them to a similar level of growth and allowed them to reunite and reignite their soulmate connection.
So, do you have many soulmates in your life? Take a moment to observe everyone around you and be grateful for all those beautiful connections who entered or left your life and helped you evolve along your consciousness evolution journey. Then, remember to cherish the ones who are still in your life and make sure they know how important they are for you ?
